Essential Oils For Sinus

Whether it’s from seasonal allergies or cold and flu symptoms, sinus congestion is uncomfortable for anyone. When your nasal passages become blocked and irritated and you are left with a feeling of heavy pressure and pain, it’s hard to keep up with the day.

Some essential oils are now known to not only decongest the sinuses but also calm inflammation and provide clarity so you can get on with the important things in life.

Benefits Of Essential Oils For Sinus

Congestion disrupts your ability to concentrate while leaving your sinuses feeling heavy and sore. Essential oils are known to ease sinus congestion with their naturally occurring anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antibacterial abilities.

While synthetic medications may provide temporary relief, they are also known to interfere with existing medications and cause drowsiness. In some circumstances, they can also lead to more serious side effects such as high blood pressure.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are known to provide natural relief in the following ways:

  • Improves sleep quality
  • Prevents production of bacteria
  • Clears nasal passages
  • Relieves headaches and inflammation
  • Alleviates heavy congestion symptoms

Best Essential Oils For Sinus

Essential oils have versatile properties that may relieve symptoms associated with sinus congestion while also boosting the immune system and stimulating mental clarity. Here are some of our favourite essential oils for sinus relief:

Eucalyptus Blue Gum Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Blue Gum Essential Oil is packed with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and is historically known to alleviate sinus and respiratory discomfort. Meanwhile, its active compound 1, 8 Cineole (eucalyptol) is highly valued for its ability to relieve inflammation and nasal discomfort.

In fact, a 2009 study found that 1,8 Cineole effectively treated inflammation of the nasal cavity associated with sinus congestion (also known as Nonpurulent rhinosinusitis). Its crisp, native scent is also known to promote a calm environment and help you have a restful night’s sleep.

How To Use Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Sinus

You can use Eucalyptus Oil in a few ways:

  • Diffusing: Add a few drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil to your aromatherapy diffuser or electric vaporiser to help ease coughing and congestion. We recommend 4 - 8 drops depending on the size of the water tank in the diffuser. For those who do not own a diffuser, Eucalyptus Oil can also be added to a steam vapour (or a bowl of steaming water). Just be sure to inhale at a safe distance to avoid burns.

  • Warm Bath: Add a few drops to a warm bath to help create a calm, soothing atmosphere.

Oregano Essential Oil

Oregano Essential Oil actively fights against respiratory discomfort with its natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. With a high concentration of healing compounds including carvacrol, thymol and terpinene, Oregano Oil may relieve pain and inflammation associated with congestion. With a robust herbaceous aroma, Oregano Oil also provides powerful relief against sinus discomfort.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil has a high menthol concentration and natural analgesic, antiseptic and antibiotic properties with a cool, crisp aroma. Dilution Guidelines

Due to their high concentration it’s important to always apply a safe application of essential oils. When using essential oils for topical application, we recommend diluting your essential oils in a carrier oil. Some of our most popular carrier oils are:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Almond Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Rosehip Oil
  • Unscented Massage Oil

If you are particularly sensitive when it comes to the skin, essential oils may trigger an allergic response. Therefore, we suggest doing a test patch on the skin before using essential oils. If you are particularly concerned, we recommend speaking with your doctor or aromatherapist before beginning any essential oil treatment.

We also strongly advise against directly inhaling the vapour from an aromatherapy diffuser or steam dispenser as this can irritate the mucous membrane.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding it is also important to consult with your doctor or health professional before implementing essential oils into your routine.

If congestion persists or worsens, please visit your GP, certified aromatherapist or healthcare provider for supplementary relief.

Essential Oil Safety

Whilst essential oils are natural products, they are extremely potent and can cause serious harm if used incorrectly. For this reason, we recommend the following:

  • In line with the Therapeutic Goods Act, we do not recommend ingesting essential oils without the guidance of a registered Aromatherapist or Naturopath.
  • Avoid using essential oils during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.
  • We recommend storing your essential oils in a cool, dry place at room temperature, ensuring that they are not directly exposed to sunlight and are out of reach of children or pets.
  • Essential oils can be very concentrated and are likely to cause irritation or reactions if applied directly to the skin. For this reason, it is important to first dilute your essential oils before using topically (on the skin). Our recommended dilution percentages can be found under the ‘Best Essential Oils For Sinus’ section.
