Castor Oil Uses and Benefits

Published 18th Aug 2022

You may have heard about Castor Oil, but its capabilities go far beyond your regular vegetable oil. As a natural moisturiser for healthy, strong hair, Castor Oil is a versatile, effective carrier oil with impressive abilities across skin and hair care.

The Castor plant is native to the Mediterranean region and tropical regions of Africa and India. Castor Oil is one of the most versatile carrier oils for therapeutic purposes and has been utilised ever since Ancient Egypt around 4000 B.C. Traditionally, Castor Oil has a rich history as a laxative, and has been seen to be effective at treating skin inflammations, alleviating headaches, inducing labour and even removing cysts, growths and warts.

Now, Castor Oil is used in soaps, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics due to its anti-inflammatory and moisturising qualities.

What is Castor Oil?

Made from cold-pressing the seeds of the Ricinus Communis plant, Castor Oil has a thick and somewhat sticky consistency and is pale in colour. To prolong the shelf life of Castor Oil it is recommended that it is stored in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.

Despite its medium consistency, Castor Oil easily penetrates into the skin and is suitable for oily and acne-prone skin types. With anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, emollient and antioxidant properties, Castor Oil is known to cleanse and protect both dry and oily skin. It is also known to boost skin complexion, build moisture retention, assist with skin conditions, and alleviate muscle pain.

Benefits of Castor Oil

As a carrier oil, the main compounds of Castor Oil include oleic, linoleic (Omega 6), alpha-linolenic (Omega 3) fatty acids, stearic and palmitic acid, and ricinoleic acid. Combined, these compounds work together as a rich source of anti-inflammatory, emollient and antibacterial properties. In other words, it’s a goldmine to smooth, soothe, nourish and cleanse the skin and hair.

When used in aromatherapy, some popular benefits of Castor Oil may include:
