Products, Ordering & Delivery

How are my products packaged?

For each of our products, images on our website show how each product is packaged when you select your preferred size.

Our retail sized Essential Oils are packaged in amber glass bottles and come with a protective cardboard outer tube that provides protection during shipment, as well as optimal storage conditions. Our Carrier Oils are packaged in quality amber PET plastic, that is BPA free and recyclable to ensure lower freight costs and safe delivery to our customers.

Ingredients and bulk sized products come packed in a variety of ways, suitably chosen based on the type and size of the product chosen. Please refer to our website images for each individual product and size, as this will show how the product is packaged, such as in glass, aluminium, plastic or cardboard.

Should I be worried about products being packaged in plastic?

At AWO, we’re committed to delivering high-quality products safely and efficiently. While our retail-sized essential oils are packaged in amber glass bottles with protective outer tubes, our carrier oils and many bulk products are packaged in BPA-free, recyclable amber PET plastic. This material is chosen to ensure safe delivery, reduce freight costs, and minimise breakage—especially for larger sizes.

It’s also important to know, typically brands receive and transport bulk oils and raw materials in food-grade plastic containers, as it’s the industry standard for safe and practical shipping. To maintain quality, we always recommend storing your oils in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Raw ingredients received in cardboard boxes, once opened, should be stored in an airtight container or resealed to ensure an optimal shelf-life.

Essential Oils

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that capture the natural aroma and essence of their source. They are typically obtained through processes like steam distillation or cold pressing, and each oil reflects the unique scent and characteristics of the plant it comes from. At AWO, our essential oils are 100% pure and natural, making them ideal for a wide range of uses – from personal applications to natural formulations.

What does “100% Pure” really mean?

100% pure refers to the source, extraction process and authenticity of an oil. It means the oil is sourced only from the named botanical species, with no tampering, additives, fillers, dilutions, or synthetic/natural aroma components added.

Are your essential oils 100% pure?

All AWO essential oils are 100% pure and high-quality, free from additives or dilutions. We also offer a small range of cosmetic, natural blends, 3% dilution blends and natural lifestyle blends, which are clearly labelled.

At AWO, we pride ourselves on transparency regarding the origin and composition of our products. For detailed information, simply refer to the Product Details tab at the bottom of each individual product page.

Are your essential oils therapeutic grade?

AWO does not use the term "Therapeutic Grade" for our essential oils, as it is a marketing label with no formal certification or governing body. Instead, we focus on offering 100% pure essential oils with no tampering, additives, fillers, dilutions, or synthetic/natural aroma components - ensuring the highest quality so you can truly benefit from their therapeutic properties in aromatherapy.

What is the difference between essential oils and carrier oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts used for aromatherapy and therapeutic purposes, while carrier oils are derived from the fatty parts of plants and are used to safely dilute essential oils for topical application—while also helping to nourish and moisturise the skin

What is the purpose of essential oils?

Essential oils are valued for their aromatic properties and are widely used in personal care, home fragrance, and natural product making. Many customers choose to incorporate essential oils into their daily routines for their natural scents, or to create custom blends for diffusers, massage, or DIY skincare.

What is the most common use of essential oils?

One of the most popular ways to use essential oils is through diffusion. Whether it’s to freshen up a space or create a calming environment, diffusing essential oils is a simple and effective way to enjoy their natural aroma. They’re also commonly used in personal care products, massage blends, and handmade household items, or diluted with carrier oils and used topically (on the skin) to help moisturise, hydrate or heal.

What are the top 6 essential oils?

While everyone has their favourites, these six essential oils are consistently popular among AWO customers:
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Sweet Orange Essential Oil
  • Frankincense Essential Oil
  • Bergamot Essential Oil
  • Eucalyptus Blue Gum Essential Oil
  • Peppermint Essential Oil
These oils are loved for their distinctive aromas and versatility in a range of applications, appreciated for their wide-ranging natural benefits.

How do fragrance and essential oils differ?

The key difference between essential oils and fragrance oils lies in their composition and purpose.

Essential oils are 100% pure, natural plant extracts known for their therapeutic benefits—supporting wellbeing through aromatherapy, skincare, and more.

Fragrance oils, on the other hand, are typically synthetic or a blend of synthetic and natural components, created to imitate specific scents and commonly used in perfumes and scented products.

If you're seeking a natural, plant-based option with holistic benefits, essential oils are the ideal choice.

Carrier Oils

What is a carrier oil, and why should I use them?

Carrier oils are natural, plant-based oils used to safely dilute essential oils before topical application. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, carrier oils help deliver them gently to the skin—reducing the risk of irritation while enhancing absorption.
Beyond dilution, carrier oils are rich in nutrients, fatty acids, and antioxidants that help moisturise, protect, and nourish the skin.

Many also have their own therapeutic properties that complement the benefits of essential oils.

Popular carrier oils include Jojoba Oil, Almond Oil Sweet, and Coconut Oil.

Is essential oil better than carrier oil?

Neither essential oils nor carrier oils are "better"—they each have their own unique role and work best together.

Essential oils are powerful, aromatic extracts known for their therapeutic properties, often used to enhance mood, support health, and add fragrance.

Carrier oils, on the other hand, are gentle, unscented or mildly scented oils that dilute essential oils, making them safe for topical application. They also provide their own skin-nourishing benefits, offering hydration, protection, and nourishment.

When combined, essential oils and carrier oils create effective, safe, and luxurious skincare, massage, and DIY products.

Which oils are considered carrier oils?

Carrier oils are typically cold-pressed from nuts, seeds, or kernels. Some commonly used ones include:

  • Almond Oil Sweet
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Rosehip Oil
  • Avocado Oil
Each carrier oil has its own texture, absorption rate, and natural benefits, so the best one depends on your use and skin type.

What is the best carrier oil to mix with essential oils?

It all depends on the purpose of your blend!

For general skin use: Jojoba Oil is a standout choice due to its remarkable similarity to the skin’s natural oils. Its lightweight texture and fast absorption make it ideal for daily hydration, leaving the skin soft without any greasy residue.

For massage: Almond Oil Sweet is smooth, nourishing, and easy to work with, making it a go-to for a relaxing and effective massage. Its rich texture provides excellent glide, while its high vitamin E content helps to hydrate and replenish the skin.

For facial care: Rosehip Oil is highly prized for its lightweight feel and skin-loving benefits. It’s especially popular in facial care routines for its ability to promote healthy, glowing skin, as it’s rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants.

At AWO, we ensure that all of our carrier oils are 100% pure, carefully sourced, and perfect for blending with essential oils to enhance the benefits of your self-care routines.

Is coconut oil a carrier oil?

Yes! Coconut Oil - especially the fractionated version (which remains liquid at room temperature)—is a popular and versatile carrier oil. It’s lightweight, non-greasy, and has a long shelf life, making it ideal for skincare, massage blends, and DIY formulations.

Application & Usage

How do I use essential oils?

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways depending on your preferences and needs. Some of the most popular methods include:

  • Diffusing: Adding a few drops to an essential oil diffuser to naturally scent your space.
  • Topical application: Diluting your essential oil with a carier oil and applying it to the skin – for example, as part of a massage blend or skincare routine.
  • DIY creations: Using essential oils as an ingredient for homemade candles, cleaning products, bath soaks or beauty formulations.

You’ll find more ways to enjoy each essential oil on its individual product page under the "How to Use" tab, or on our blog

How do I use essential oils for healing?

Essential oils can support healing in a variety of ways, from soothing the mind and emotions through aromatherapy, to healping ease physical discomfort when dilluted and applied topically. Whether used in a diffuser, a relaxing bath, or blended into massage oils, essential oils offer a natural and holistic way to promote overall wellbeing.

Each of our essential oil product pages highlights the unique benefits and uses of that specific oil, helping you choose the right one for your needs.

Can I put essential oils directly on my body?

Yes you can - but only after dilution with a carrier oil.

Using essential oils on the skin is called topical application. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, they must be diluted with a carrier oil before topical use to avoid skin irritation or burns. Dilution also helps some oils to absorb better into the skin.

Always mix your essential oil with a carrier oil (like Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil) first. A general rule of thumb is 2-4% dilution for general use (that's about 2-4 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil for most adults), and 1–2% dilution for facial application. Note that highly potent oils like Peppermint require a 1-2% dilution for general use. Always check the dilution guidelines before using an oil on your skin.

How many drops of essential oil per 100ml carrier oil?

For general topical use, a safe dilution ratio is 2-4%, which equates to 20–40 drops of essential oil per 100ml of carrier oil. This ratio can vary depending on the intended use and the essential oil being used. For facial products or sensitive skin, use a lower dilution (around 1-2%). Always perform a patch test before full application.

What oil is proven to regrow hair?

Rosemary Essential Oil is widely used in natural haircare for its stimulating properties, which may help support healthy hair growth, improve circulation to the scalp, and reduce dandruff. Diluted in a carrier oil and used in scalp massages, it’s a go-to for those looking to nourish their hair naturally. However, results can vary, so it’s best to consult a professional for persistent hair loss concerns.

Can your essential oils be taken internally?

At AWO, we follow the guidance of Australian health authorities, including the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which does not recommend ingesting essential oils.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and can cause serious harm if taken internally. Furthermore, AWO does not currently hold food accreditation on our premises, and therefore our products are not suitable for consumption.

All our products are recommended primarily for cosmetic and aromatherapy purposes — such as use in diffusers, topical applications (with appropriate dilution), or DIY creations.

Can you use essential oils in a humidifier and how do i diffuse them?

It depends on your humidifier. Some models are designed for use with essential oils, but many are not—adding oils to a non-compatible unit can cause damage. Always refer to your humidifier’s manual before using essential oils.

For safe and effective aromatic use, we recommend a dedicated essential oil diffuser. Here’s how to use one:

Fill the water tank with clean, room-temperature water.

Add 3–6 drops of your chosen essential oil (adjust based on room size and personal preference).

Replace the lid, plug in the diffuser, and turn it on.

Diffusers are a simple, safe way to enjoy the benefits of essential oils throughout your home.

Safety & Side Effects

Are essential oils safe?

Essential oils are generally safe when used correctly and in moderation. Because they are highly concentrated, it's important to follow proper usage guidelines - such as dilution for topical use and diffusing in well-ventilated spaces. Keep essential oils out of reach of children and avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, or broken skin.

Can essential oils be ingested?

At AWO, we follow the guidance of Australian health authorities, including the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which does not recommend ingesting essential oils.

Are essential oils safe for children?

Some essential oils can be used around children, but many are not recommended for young ones, especially infants and toddlers. Always check age-appropriate essential oil guidelines, dilution recommendations and consult with a qualified professional before using essential oils on or around children. When in doubt, opt for very mild oils (like Lavender) and always use proper dilution.

What essential oils are safe to diffuse around pets including dogs and cats?

Essential oils are highly concentrated and animals can be more sensitive to them than humans, so extra care is needed when using them around pets.

For cats and dogs, some oils like Lavender, Frankincense, and Chamomile may be suitable for diffusing in small amounts in well-ventilated areas. We recommend consulting with a veterinarian to ensure certain essential oils are suitable to be used around your pet.

Always store essential oils and diffusers out of reach of pets, and never apply oils directly to their skin or fur without professional advice. If diffusing, ensure the room is ventilated and that your pet can leave the space at any time.

Which essential oils are toxic to humans?

Most essential oils are safe when used correctly, but a few can cause harm if ingested, applied undiluted, or overused - oils like Wintergreen, Camphor, and Wormwood particularly so and best used in small doses. Always follow the recommended guidelines before using an oil on your skin and use a lower dilution ratio of 1-2% for potent oils like Peppermint (0.5-1% for facial application).

Can smelling essential oils be dangerous?

Smelling essential oils through gentle diffusion is generally safe for most people, but overexposure or direct inhalation from the bottle may cause headaches, dizziness, or nausea - especially in sensitive individuals. Use essential oils in moderation and with proper ventilation to enjoy them safely.

Side effects of essential oils on skin

If used undiluted or in high concentrations, essential oils may cause skin irritation, redness, or allergic reactions. Always perform a patch test first and dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying to skin. People with sensitive skin should use extra caution.

What essential oils should not be mixed together?

Some essential oils don’t blend well due to their strong or clashing aromas, while others may increase sensitivity when combined. For example, mixing citrus oils (which can be photosensitive) with spicy oils (like Cinnamon or Clove) may increase the risk of skin irritation. When blending oils, start small and always consult reliable sources or formulations. It's recommended to blend top and middle note oils to create balanced, long-lasting scents. Avoid using too many oils from the same note family - for example, using only top notes can make the blend feel flighty and short-lived.

Do essential oils damage washing machines?

Essential oils are highly concentrated, and when used in large or undiluted amounts, they may damage rubber seals or components in washing machines. To avoid this, it’s best to dilute essential oils first by adding them to a carrier (like vinegar or castile soap) before using them in a laundry cycle. Use only a few drops at a time and follow your machine’s care guidelines.

Production, Sourcing & Certification

How are essential oils made?

Essential oils are typically extracted from plants through two main methods: steam distillation and cold pressing. Steam distillation involves passing steam through the plant material to release the aromatic compounds, which are then cooled and collected. Cold pressing, often used for citrus oils, mechanically presses the plant peels to extract the oil without using heat. Both methods ensure that the oil maintains its natural integrity, benefits and aroma.

At AWO, we pride ourselves on transparency regarding the extraction and composition of our products. For detailed information, simply refer to the Product Details tab on each individual product page.

What is the difference between cold-pressed oil and essential oils?

The main difference lies in the source and extraction method.

Cold-pressed oils (such as Carrier Oils) are usually extracted from seeds, nuts or fruit pulp and are thicker, nutrient-rich oils used to dilute essential oils or to support skin and hair care.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and aromatic, extracted mainly from the leaves, flowers, bark or peels of plants. These oils are potent and often more volatile, which means they must be used with care - especially when applied topically.

What is the difference between organic and non-organic essential oils?

Organic essential oils are extracted from plants grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers, and are typically certified by a recognised organic body. At AWO, our Australian Certified Organic (ACO) range gives you the option to choose oils that align with organic farming values.

Our AWO non-organic essential oils, while not certified organic, are still 100% pure and sourced responsibly from trusted growers using conventional farming methods.

Whether you prefer certified organic or non-organic, we’re committed to full transparency and quality—so you can choose what best suits your needs and values.

Are your essential and carrier oils organic?

At AWO, we believe in honest labeling - that’s why we never call a product ‘Organic’ (even if they’re allowed to be) unless it has been formally certified. We choose ACO (Australian Certified Organic), Australia’s most recognised certification, to guarantee the highest standards for our organic range.

Our ACO range allows you to select essential oils that align with your personal preferences and values. Whether you’re drawn to certified organic options or our 100% pure, ethically sourced oils, each product is crafted with a commitment to quality and full transparency.

AWO Australian Certified Organic Certification #12456

Is it worth buying organic essential oils?

Whether or not to choose organic essential oils often comes down to personal values and preferences. Organic essential oils are derived from plants grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers, and are certified by an organic governing body. Many people opt for organic for added peace of mind regarding how the plants are grown and processed.

At AWO, we proudly offer both Australian Certified Organic (ACO) essential oils and a wide range of 100% pure, non-organic essential oils. All of our oils—organic or not—are natural, unadulterated, and undergo strict quality testing. So whatever your preference, you can trust in the purity, quality, and transparency of every AWO product.

If an oil is ‘pure’, does this mean it is also ‘organic’?

Not necessarily. A “pure” essential oil means it contains no additives, fillers, or synthetic ingredients post-extraction. However, this does not guarantee that the plants it was derived from were grown organically.

Organic essential oils, like those in our ACO (Australian Certified Organic) range, are extracted from plants grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers. These oils are certified by a recognised organic governing body and offer added peace of mind for those who prioritise chemical-free farming practices.

It’s also worth noting that not all brands are fully transparent. To ensure you’re purchasing a truly high-quality oil, look for:

The botanical (Latin) name of the plant

The country of origin

Details about the extraction method

Whether the oil is 100% pure or certified organic

At AWO, we offer both pure and organic options, and are committed to full transparency—so you always know exactly what you're getting.

Storage, Expiry & Maintenance

How long do essential oils last?

Essential oils do have a shelf life. While they don’t spoil like food, they can oxidise over time, which may affect their aroma, colour, and overall quality. It all depends on the oil and how it’s stored.

Most essential oils can last anywhere from 1 to 5 years, depending on the type of oil and storage conditions. Citrus oils (like Lemon or Orange) typically last 1–2 years due to their high Limonen content, a natural compound that oxidises quickly when exposed to air, light, or heat. Woody oils (like Sandalwood or Cedarwood) often last much longer, sometimes 5 years or more.

Proper storage plays a big role in preserving their shelf life. Store in dark glass bottles with the lid tightly sealed to minimise oxygen exposure and keep in a cool, dark place away from sunlight. Always check for changes in scent or appearance, and refer to the label for best-before guidance.

How should I store my essential oils?

To maximise shelf life and maintain quality, store your essential oils in dark glass bottles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep the lids tightly sealed to avoid oxidation and evaporation. A cupboard, drawer, or dedicated essential oil box works perfectly.
